CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Ramone Mirando, I assume,” said Celeste.

“The daughter of Ivan Pechkin, I assume,” smiled Mirando. “You are lovely, truly lovely. You were much easier to find than I imagined. Rather foolish of you, really. I assume your father taught you better, but like most daughters, you didn’t listen.”

Celeste just stared at the man, not giving anything away.

“You see, you bought the ticket to Columbia in your own name and rented the car in your name. Foolish. The stable owner was difficult to convince, of course, but once we killed all his horses, he had no choice but to tell us it was you, a woman, who saved the Robicheaux SEAL.”

Again, Celeste gave nothing away, not saying a word to the man seated beside her. He was capable of anything, and she wanted to be sure that she didn’t provoke him. She hadn’t pressed her alarms yet, not wanting to draw attention to the necklace and bracelet. She knew that the team would track her, but the alarm would allow for them to hear any communication as well.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“I want your family to suffer. All of them. I want every man and woman who is part of REAPER-Patriots to suffer.”

“We’ve done nothing except obey the law and do what our country asked of us,” she said calmly.

“So pious,” he laughed. “We’ll have to beat that out of you. You’ll do well in our stable of women. I entertain very important people, and they will pay a high price to be with an RP woman.”

“Or they’ll believe you’ve lost your mind for taking an RP woman,” she said, shrugging.

The slap across her face came so quickly, Celeste didn’t have time to move. She landed in the aisle of the jet, face down, staring at her bracelet. Reaching beneath the medallion, she depressed the button and smiled as she sat up. At least they hadn’t made the connection that the property behind the café was their property. If they had, they would have already attempted to storm the gates.

“Hit me again, and I won’t be so compliant,” she dared.

Mirando and his men laughed, shaking their heads at the brazen young woman. Alejandro lifted her and helped her to her seat. She felt the descent of the plane begin and realized they were much closer to his home than she’d suspected. Staring out the windows, she recognized the peak in the distance. Colorado. They were in Colorado.

“Take her to the mansion,” said Mirando.

“But, sir, Vivienne is there,” said Alejandro.

“I know that!” he yelled at his man. “Perhaps the two of them will become more compliant.”

Celeste listened to the conversation, realizing that Vivienne must be Mirando’s daughter. Maybe the young woman would listen to reason and help her escape. Either way, Mirando and his men obviously didn’t think she was smart enough to escape on her own. They didn’t bother to blindfold her in any attempt to hide the location.

She watched as small towns flew by as they made their way up the mountain in the caravan of black SUVs.
